Forced to the internet after a government shutdown, listenership to Radio Globo/Honduras quadruples

Despite government troops forcing their way into Radio Globo’s headquarters in the capital city of Tegucigalpa, taking all of their broadcast equipment and harassing reporters, Radio Globo has become a leading voice of events in Honduras. The number of listeners has reportedly increased four-fold, to over 400,000. The closure of Radio Globo came after the military government, which overthrew President Manuel Zelaya, announced an emergency decree putting severe limits on civil liberties. Radio Globo director David Romero tells the Christian Science Monitor, “It is frustrating the government. They can´t stop us.” Radio Globo has now become a focal point for those who favor the ousted government. Amnesty International has a chilling account of the morning Radio Globo was shut down, which you can read by clicking here.
