Galveston's KGBC (1540) goes to brokered programming
The barrier island AM station dropped its mix of music (oldies, classic hits) and local talk last week and went temporarily silent. This week, the Galveston Daily News reports hearing some programming aimed at a Chinese/Asian population, though it also detects hip-hip and gospel. It’s likely that the Siga Broadcasting station has shifted to a a strategy of taking brokered programming – though it’s not at all clear that the whole station’s been brokered out, as the paper suggests, to China Radio International. Siga executive Julian Arango tells the Daily News that local businesses struggled mightily after Hurricane Ike in September 2008, and that impacted KGBC: “We had tons of listeners but not enough financial support.” The Houston Board of Radio-Info.com tracks the latest developments, here.
