Heavy winds in Southern California disturb transmitters and towers

“Unusually heavy winds” caused CBS Radio’s all-news KNX (1070) to run an unmodulated signal on Wednesday evening, according to the CGC Communicator newsletter. On Mount Harvard, KFSCI's main antenna fell to the ground. The newsletter says it "was one of several UHF-TV antennas that had been installed in a candelabra configuration atop Harvard's main tower." KNBC-TV's Kevin Moore says its path to the ground was fortuitous: it fell between the Harvard facility's microwave antenna rack, and power transformers and emergency power generators. KSCI is back on the air using its backup on Mt. Wilson. Two years ago, Mt. Wilson was menaced by out-of-control wildfires. This time, the threat is from super-high winds stressing out broadcast facilities. The winds have also taken out power lines to transmission facilities, and some stations are on generator backup power. Los Angeles County declared a state of emergency due to the threat from the winds.
