In protest, three Canadian FMs will play "Money For Nothing" for 1 solid hour

From today's TRI Newsletter: Newcap programmer Steve Jones calls the Canadian broadcast industry’s Broadcast Standards Council "a vital organization that serves our industry well." But he says it went too far in ruling that a station in St. John, Newfoundland shouldn’t play the original 1985 Grammy-winning version of “Money For Nothing.” Newcap's K97/CIRK, Edmonton says “if you listen to the context of the terms, you will realize it is an artistic portrayal of a bigoted person looking at the riches and excesses of the music industry.” (The lyric goes “That little faggot with the earring and the makeup/Yeah, buddy, that’s his own hair/That little faggot’s got a jet airplane/That little faggot, he’s a millionaire.”) K97 says even “LGBT supporter Elton John” has performed the song as written. So tonight (January 14), CIRK and Newcap sisters Q104, Halifax and K-Rock, Cold Lake, Alberta will make a point about “the dangers of censorship”, and loop the unedited version of “Money” for a whole hour. They've also invited representatives from the gay community to participate. Note that the Newfoundland station’s not being fined, and it’s not clear the decision by the Atlantic regional panel of the Broadcast Standards Council applies elsewhere. After wrestling with a listener complaint, it decided that “the societal values…have shifted and the broadcast of the song in 2010 must reflect those values, rather than those of 1985.” The Canada Board of Radio-Info.com discusses "Money For Nothing" and censorship, here.
