In Reno: Smooth jazz is gone, sports is on FM, and country changes channels
After playing “Happy Trails to You,” Lotus Communications shelved “Cub Country” KUUB (94.5) Reno, Nev., and took it all-sports using ESPN. It’s been using ESPN on one of its AM stations, KPLY at 630, and that station is still sports, but now affiliated with Fox Sports Radio. Another Lotus AM, KHIT at 1450, is now simulcasting with the new “ESPN 94.5”, and so is an FM translator at 94.3 to the south, near Carson City. Lotus competitor Wilks Broadcasting quickly noticed the loss of the country “Cub” and made the strategic decision to dump smooth jazz at its own KJZS (92.1). New format at 92.1 – a country “Wolf.” That puts the Wolf up against Citadel’s country “Bull” KBUL, which ranked No. 4 in the Spring Arbitrons. So far, those represent changes at four stations (two AMs, two FMs). Some locals go on to speculate that Lotus may eventually put Spanish language ESPN Deportes on 1450, where it was once heard. That would give Lotus three sports stations – ESPN, Fox Sports Radio and ESPN Deportes. Plenty of talk about the multiple changes on the Nevada Board of Radio-Info.com, here.
