In Washington, Citadel flips smooth jazz WJZW (105.9) to PPM-friendly "True Oldies"
All that's left of 14 years of smooth jazz is a splash-page note: "Saying goodbye is never easy - especially to good friends." The note is signed by the jocks (both local and syndicated) who are now off the air: Ramsey Lewis, Al Santos, Vanniece Johnson, Jay Lang and "all who were part of this journey." The 3pm switch to oldies under new PD Steve Allan produced frustration to those listening online - Citadel cut the streaming as the format change was announced. The DCRTV.com site says smooth jazz will continue on the HD2 channel. While Citadel hopes the coming measurement changeover to the Arbitron People Meter will be good for a big-cumeing format like oldies. Radio-Info hears that Scott Shannon's voice is already on the air - so this "True Oldies" station may unfold like sister True Oldies 94.7 in Chicago. Another dimension - there's a smooth jazz showdown on the HD2 channel, because just before Citadel's flip at 105.9, Clear Channel's WASH-FM (97.1) launched its own smooth jazz music service. It's here.
