Industry Mourns Radio Veteran Larry James

Veteran air personality Larry James passed away Dec. 26 after a battle with cancer, reports John Long, president of the Georgia Radio Museum and Hall of Fame. James was an air personality at Columbus, GA stations WDAK, WCLS, and WPNX, a founding board member of the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame, a member of its Council of Advisors, and a 2009 Career Achievement Inductee. He got his first radio job in 1961 at WDAK (Big Johnny Reb Radio), hosting the evening show. He moved to crosstown top 40 WCLS as PD/morning man. In 1967, he joined country WPNX, staying until 1970 when he went to WQIK Jacksonville, Fla. After Jacksonville, he worked at WUNI Mobile, Alabama until 1975, when he went to WBT Charlotte, N.C., where he was named the Country Music Assn.'s medium market air personality of the year in 1978. In 1991, James joined KPLX and KLIF Dallas as creative services director. He returned to the Southeast in 1999 to do imaging at WIVK Knoxville, Tenn. In 2000, James segued to WMJJ (Magic 96.5) Birmingham, Ala., where he did imaging until 2006 when he retired to Columbus. Discuss James' legacy here.
