Insurance company study says talk radio is a distraction to drivers
And you thought hand-held cellphones were bad. A study by the European-based Zurich Connect Insurance says arguments on the radio “are a major cause of distraction for car drivers.” The survey of over 2,000 people found four out of five said the radio was a distraction to them while they drive. The survey singled out talk radio, saying phone-in debates and shows such as BBC Radio 4’s “The Today Program” are two times as distracting as music on the radio. Zurich Connect’s Mike Quinton tells the England’s Independent newspaper, “Listening to Radio 4 presenters giving politicians a hard time or to your favorite shock jock’s phone-in could mean you are more than twice as likely to take your eye off the road ahead.”
