Is Apple planning on using HD Radio?

HD Radio

Apple submitted a new patent application this week, named “Digital Radio Tagging Using an RF Tuner Accessory.” According to Apple Insider, the patent states the device allows users with a handheld device “to scan all stations, or only for stations delivering high-quality digital audio content,” giving users the ability to scan and search through live radio content without needing to change stations or channels. Apple Insider says the concept could allow Apple devices to “go beyond FM with an HD Radio tuner, allowing full integration with HD Radio — a feature that has been rumored for some time.” The patent includes an external radio receiver that transmits both audio and data to the device. Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple had started discussions with iBiquity to place HD Radio in future iPhone and iPod touch models. Of course Apple and other companies frequently file patents on things they might develop some day, but have no current plans for. Nothing out of Apple about the Apple Insider report on HD Radio.
