Job cuts bring out protesters to Pacifica's KPFA in Berkeley
A major dropoff in donations to non-com KPFA-FM (94.1) in Berkeley, California brought news of job cuts, and that news brought out about 100 protesters who are against the proposed cuts. Donations have fallen an average of about $500,000 annually for the past three years. The Mercury News says KPFA plans to cut the equivalent of seven full-time jobs "from a paid staff whose full- and part-time hours add up to about 30 full-time positions," according to a statement from KPFA & Pacifica board member Tracy Rosenberg. Protesters believe the staff cuts could be averted if instead, the budget of the national staff that runs Pacifica was cut. Pacifica Radio owns and operates four other radio stations, including KPFK-FM (90.7) in Los Angeles, KPFT-FM (90.1) in Houston, WPFW-FM (89.3) in Washington, DC & WBAI-FM (99.5) in New York City.
