Jobs are saved for some staffers at Pittsburgh's WDUQ (90.5)
It was expected that as many as 20 people would have been laid off when Essential Public Media takes over Pittsburgh's non-commercial WDUQ-FM (90.5). However, some of those who thought they would be leaving will keep their jobs under the new ownership. Essential Public Media announces they will hire 14 people to staff the station, seven of whom are former WDUQ staffers. WDUQ-FM jazz announcers Bob Studebaker and Helen Wigger will be the hosts of "JazzWorks" on the HD channel, with Studebaker becoming a producer and Wigger named Operations Director of the station, which will also be changing call letters pending FCC approval. In addition, current WDUQ Assistant News Director Mark Nootbaar is named Senior Assignment Editor. Other WDUQ staffers joining the new station include Kevin Gavin as Director of Interns and Producer. Larkin Page-Jacobs will host the local edition of All Things Considered and be a reporter. Erika Beras is named Behavioral Health Care Reporter. Noah Brode will host Weekend Edition Saturday/Sunday. The Pittsburgh Board of Radio-Info.com is staying on top of the situation, here.
