"Just the facts, ma'am" – Dragnet debuted on radio 60 years ago today
Even before “Dragnet” became a TV sensation, it debuted on radio on June 3, 1949. Starring its creator, Dragnet was led by Jack Webb, who played Sergeant Joe Friday, a no-nonsense detective who worked for the Los Angeles Police Department solving crimes. The radio show lasted eight years, but after only two years it added a TV version, in 1951. After a hiatus off TV, it returned in 1967, and became a smash hit due to its unusual fast pace and realism. As a result of its fame, the Los Angeles Police Department retired badge number 714, the badge used by Webb in the series. You can watch Dragnet shows, courtesy of Hulu.com, here.
