KDKA, Pittsburgh (1020) observes its 90th birthday on Election Day

The celebration of "the world's first commercial radio station" opens this weekend with broadcasts and appearances at the Senator John Heinz History Center, which will feature current and past personalities of news/talk KDKA. Then on Tuesday, Election Day, KDKA will be broadcasting live from the History Center in honor of what happened on its airwaves in 1920, when the Westinghouse-owned station began broadcasting the returns of the Harding-Cox presidential election. That was revolutionary, because it meant Pittsburghers did not have to wait for newspaper printing presses to learn how the election was turning out. KDKA was an outgrowth of an earlier amateur radio station in Pittsburgh named 8XK, and other facilities in other states also lay claim to "first station" status.
