KDKA's Fred Honsberger passed away this morning

He spent 30 years with the legendary KDKA-AM (1020) in Pittsburgh, and became legendary himself. Fred Honsberger joined KDKA in 1979 as a newsman who covered the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, and five years later was named KDKA’s news director. In 1989, he moved into the talk show host’s chair, where “The Honzman” became one of the most popular talk hosts in Pittsburgh, hosting the afternoon show. He was known for his opinions, but also his creativity adding elements to his show such as “The Honz Honk Off Line” to end his shows and “Honzman text-it Thursdays” where listeners could text in their questions or comments. An award winner both in news and talk, Honsberger passed away of undisclosed causes this morning. He was only 58. The Pittsburgh Board of Radio-Info picked up on the death of “Honz” in mid-morning, and the conversation continues.
