"Jake" in Oklahoma City Schemes To Buy Naming Rights To Local Arena
In a move that seems to be half stunt/half serious, Tyler Media’s country KJKE (93.3 Jake FM) Oklahoma City has launched an on-air and Facebook campaign to raise $9 million to buy the naming rights to the city’s Ford Center arena, home of the NBA Oklahoma City Thunder. Evidently, the Oklahoma Ford Dealers aren’t renewing their rights, and the station hopes to be successful in its campaign to replace them. A headline in a station press release boldly announced “Oklahoma City’s Ford Center To Be Renamed Jake Center,” followed by the small print subhead, “If radio station fundraising campaign is successful.” The station is asking each listener for $20. Morning man Crash Poteet reports the amount raised to date, a week into the campaign, is “at around $500. Only needing $8,999,500 to make it happen.” In the extremely likely event that amount is not raised, the station will donate all of the money collected to the Thunder’s NBA Cares local charities.
