Making Moves: Remembering Michael Jackson

Across the nation, stations in all formats are remembering Michael Jackson and his legacy. Here’s how some have addressed the death of the pop icon: In New York, Emmis urban AC WRKS “Kiss 98.7” celebrates the life and legacy of Jackson with special programming through the weekend, as well as an event today from noon – 3 pm in Harlem for fans. The station started its Friday programming with a live in-studio tribute during “Morning Glory” from 5 – 6am and then the award-winning “Open Line” with Bob Slade, Bob Pickett and James Mtume were on live from 6:00am to 10:00am taking calls from listeners, playing exclusive live audio, including interviews and live performances and sharing their stories of Michael … In Dallas, Dave Stewart tells us what the market was doing: Urban AC KSOL had syndicated host Michael Baisden on air who broke the news, and continued with wall-to-wall coverage. Cross town urban KKDA-F< had a gathering where fans could come to commemorate Jackson, saying “Call your mother, call your mother’s mother cause she’s a fan” … Cleveland’s radio community was quick to respond, and WKYC.Com had these reactions from the radio community: “At Z107.9, ‘Latin Assassin’ Edgar Betancourt said, ‘Let’s face it, Michael was more important to most of us than Elvis. He surpasses Elvis. That’s how big an impact he had on American culture, even world culture.’ And WZAK’s Kym Sellers “fought back tears when she talked about her personal feelings for Michael Jackson and the deep musical impact on her life,” saying “He was a genius and I can’t think of anybody who can match his extraordinary personality, his ability to craft a song into a huge hit, and his amazing dance moves."
The Radio-Info.com boards have a section now where all discussion on Jackson can be found:
