Mel Karmazin tells staffers that Sirius XM is now "the largest radio company in the U.S."
That’s based on first quarter revenues, which showed the only satellite radio operator doing $605 million in total revenue (most of it from subscriber fees) and Clear Channel Radio at $603.6 million (almost all of it from advertising revenues). Not only is Sirius “the largest radio company in the U.S.” – the CEO says “we are also #1 in the world.” Though he says that “based on seasonal differences, I estimate that Clear Channel will have greater full-year revenue than Sirius XM, but I hope your efforts in growing our company prove me wrong.” Karmazin’s pep talk to employees comes as the company lost about 400,000 net subscribers in Q1, largely because new car sales plummeted in the U.S.
