Metromedia founder John Kluge is dead at 95

John Kluge

Kluge (“KLOOG-ee”) made money doing almost everything, and one of his early successes was helping to start up Washington, D.C.’s WGAY-AM. He went on to add stations in St. Louis, Dallas, Buffalo, Tulsa, Nashville, Pittsburgh and Orlando. Kluge kept trading stations and trading up in markets, ending up in major markets such as New York (WNEW), L.A. (KLAC, KMET), Chicago (WMET), San Francisco and Seattle (KJR). He got into television, but had plenty of non-broadcasting business interests in the food business and real estate. Kluge eventually sold his TV stations (to Rupert Murdoch, as the foundation of Fox) and all his radio interests. Kluge, still a billionaire many times over despite recent losses in the restaurant business, died Tuesday night in Charlottesville.
