New direction for San Diego-market 98.9 is a U-turn to "Rock en Espanol"
The Mexican-licensed XHMORE 98.9 just went silent, after word came a few weeks ago that it would be dropping its ESPN Radio affiliation and its English-language all-sports format. Now the station’s splash-page says there will be “more rock in Spanish” starting September 1. ESPN had been hoping to persuade the operators to stay all-sports a bit longer, while it looks for a new affiliate in San Diego, but apparently the 98.9 frequency will be dark the rest of August. The earlier Spanish rock phase was several formats ago, before MEC Communications tried “Blazin' Hip Hop 98.9” and then ESPN. The San Diego Board of Radio-Info is talking about the return to rock en Espanol, here.
