New IHS iSuppli study: Internet radio in cars will rise dramatically
Car sales with internet radio capability are set to increase exponentially, expected to grow by millions in the coming years. According to a report by the IHS iSuppli Automotive Research Service, sales of cars with built-in internet radio are expected to jump to 24 million units in 2018, up from just 168,000 last year. IHS principal analyst for automotive infotainment Egil Juliussen says, "The next several years will see an explosion in the use of in-vehicle apps in cars. These apps, whether built into cars or provided via connected mobile devices like smartphones, will provide a range of infotainment, entertainment, remote diagnostics and navigation services. With music having been the leading form of entertainment in cars for more than 75 years, Internet radio is expected to lead the in-vehicle app revolution." The increase will be driven by smartphones as well as cars with internet-integration built in. It is expected that next year, as many as 50 car models in the US will have internet radio app integration built into the dashboard.
