New poll: former Phoenix talk host J.D. Hayworth losing ground against McCain
Former Congressman and one-time KFYI-AM (550) drive-time talk host Hayworth is falling behind in his attempt to unseat John McCain in the GOP Arizona US Senate primary. A recent Rasmussen Reports poll finds Hayworth, who bills himself as “The Consistent Conservative”, falling further behind the four-term Senator by 54% to 34%. One reason for McCain’s lead may be that he is outspending his rival. McCain spent $15.6 million through the end of June, with much of that money transferred in from his 2008 failed Presidential campaign. Over that same period of time, Hayworth’s campaign has only generated $1.4 million. Hayworth has attempted to portray McCain as being weak on the hot-button immigration issue, and is trying to position him as being too close to President Obama on some issues. In return, McCain has promoted details about Hayworth’s 2007 infomercial pitching free government money on behalf of a company later accused of swindling customers out of thousands of dollars. The primary is August 24.
