Nickolas Ashford, songwriter, performer and NYC radio personality, dies at 70

Ashford and Simpson "Ashford and Simpson" was the songwriting credit on many Motown classics such as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson worked on many other music projects through the years. They met in New York in the 1960s and began to write and perform together. In 1966, they joined Berry Gordy's Motown staff and worked closely with Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, among others. Among their later projects: "I'm Every Woman", recorded by Chaka Khan, and used by Oprah Winfrey as a theme song. The duo had a hit single of their own in 1984 with the tune "Solid." Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson branched out in the late 1990s and did morning radio, as co-hosts on Emmis' urban AC "Kiss 98.7" WRKS, New York. Together, they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. Recently, Ashford & Simpson got a credit on Amy Winehouse's song "Tears Dry On Their Own", because it sampled "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Nickolas Ashford had been dealing with throat cancer. He died Monday (8/22) at age 70. Ashford is survived by his wife Valerie and their two daughters. The New York Times' Ben Sisario has more, here.
