NJN's TV lease will go forward; radio selloffs to be signed this week

NJN Despite protests and political maneuvering, the New Jersey State Senate failed to block Governor Chris Christie's lease of New Jersey Network TV to New York pubcaster WNET. The Assembly voted to kill Christie's deal, but the state Senate fell one vote short on Monday night. The next step is the signature of Christie, effectively ending NJN's 40-year existence. As for the nine FM radio stations: four go to New York City's WNYC and five to Philadelphia's WHYY. New Jersey US Sen. Frank Lautenberg says "It is a shame that the State Senate is allowing Governor Christie to ship an important New Jersey resource across the river to New York. This is a bad deal for the people of New Jersey that was written behind closed doors and threatens to further reduce local broadcast coverage of New Jersey news." Despite saving some money, New Jersey taxpayers will still paying about $4.7 million annually for broadcast licenses and tower and equipment maintenance.
