Online radio listening climbs sharply
While the predictions are not good for traditional print media, online radio listening continues to surge. A study conducted by the Annenberg School of Communications at USC finds that more than one-in-five, or 22% report they go "on the internet at least weekly to listen to online radio." A very interesting fact in their study is that figure is tied with those who "pay bills online," meaning more people are using smartphones and other devices to listen to radio stations and online radio shows. The survey by USC came out at the same time that a Nielsen survey finds that almost half of all US mobile phone devices are smartphones. The Nielsen report shows smartphone ownership jumped from 23% to 53% of people ages 18-24 in just two years, and those ages 13-17 increased from 16% to 40% during that same two-year period. You can read the complete Annenberg School report, which is part of an ongoing series here.
