Pacifica Radio is in talks to air the Al Jazeera Network
It’s the Persian Gulf-based radio and TV network that became a household name when it began airing video messages from Osama bin Laden following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Washington Post reports that talks between non-commercial station owner Pacifica and Al Jazeera are ongoing. Pacifica could carry the audio portion of Al Jazeera’s English-language TV channel. A deal would greatly benefit Al Jazeera, which is broadcasting its English TV channel in only three cities – Washington, DC; Burlington, Vermont and Toledo, Ohio. Al Jazeera’s reporting has been criticized by many Western governments, especially the Bush administration. The Post also says Jewish supporters and listeners of Pacifica may turn their backs on the network, due to Al Jazeera’s reporting of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Pacifica owns and operates KPFA-FM (94.1) in Berkeley, California, KPFK-FM (90.7) in Los Angeles, KPFT-FM (90.1) in Houston, WBAI-FM (99.5) in New York City and WPFW-FM (89.3) in Washington, DC.
