Philippines radio station shuts after a news anchor is attacked by a politician

Crime Scene A government-operated station in Kalinga took the unusual step of shutting down its operations for one day after one of their news anchors was attacked - allegedly attacked by the region's Governor, inside the radio station. According to the Inquirer newspaper, Governor Jocel Baac, accompanied by five members of his security detail, stormed into the offices of dzRK-AM (810) and headed straight to the broadcast studio where news anchor Jerome Tabanganay was broadcasting his noontime "Agenda Part 2" show. Baac allegedly screamed "What you are doing is too much," and grabbed one microphone, slamming it on the studio table, and taking another and hitting Tabanganay, who suffered facial cuts and bruises following the assault. One of Baac's security men also threatened Tabanganay, saying "Continue talking and I will kill you." In protest, the station went off the air for a day, claiming Baac was trying to stifle freedom of the press. However the station was also left with no working microphones. Baac tells the newspaper that he did go to the station, but claimed "I just tried to grab the microphone and take it off from its stand. The microphone might have hit him in the process." Tabanganay is no stranger to threats. Last year, he was shot by an unknown gunman as he was walking into the radio station. That crime remains unsolved.
