Now comes word that he may try his hand at politics again, this time challenging former presidential candidate John McCain for his Senate seat. The Washington Post and Wall Street Journal both reported on the rumor, claiming Hayworth is more popular with conservatives in the GOP, whereas McCain carries more moderates within his party. Hayworth took over afternoons on KFYI in 2007, a few months after his very narrow 2006 election loss to Democrat Harry Mitchell following a recount.
