Pittsburgh shocker: WAMO combo is sold to a religious broadcaster for $8.9 million
35 fulltime and part-time people were laid off by Sheridan Broadcasting on Friday (May 15), says WTAE-TV. The buyer is St. Joseph Missions, according to the Post-Gazette – and format changes are coming to urban WAMO (106.7), “Smooth R&B and Classic Soul” WAMO-AM (860) and black gospel/Christian teaching WPGR (1510). Most likely, the new format(s) will be religious. Sheridan has owned the WAMO combo for 36 years. It continues to operate stations in other markets, and it’s the majority owner of Pittsburgh-based American Urban Radio Networks. The Pittsburgh Board at Radio-Info says it’s in shock after the announced sale and format changes, and begins speculating about how other Burgh stations might react or adjust their own formats. There’s also a report about the Friday 4pm staff meeting where employees “were told to clean out their desks, lockers and offices.” That’s here.
