Plugged in: a new CHR "Amp" for Detroit

CBS has pulled smooth jazz off 98.7, WVMV, as rumored. It’s the second “Amp” station for CBS, following in the path of the quick success of KAMP-FM (97.1) in Los Angeles. Dan Mason’s division thus chooses another open attack on a dominant Clear Channel top 40 station, and CBS CHR format captain Dom Theodore used to program it. That’s “Channel 95.5” WKQI, and it was #1 in the latest Arbitron PPM ratings, age 6+ AQH share. While smooth jazz WVMV (98.7) wasn’t exactly at the bottom, ranking 11th. Speaking of the smooth jazz format on WVMV, Detroit market manager Deb Kenyon says “new media and new technologies have given us the chance to still keep this [smooth jazz] programming on the air.” So it goes to the HD-2 multicasting channel of Amp, as well as to SmoothJazzDetroit.com. Talk about the change on the Detroit Board of Radio-Info.com.
