Private radio stations are gaining a foothold in the Arab world

A report by the Amman, Jordan-based New Arab Advisors Group shows independent radio stations are beginning to become a big part of the radio landscape in Arab countries. In July 2009, there were 346 FM radio stations broadcasting in 18 Arab countries, and 48% of those were private stations not owned by governments. The “FM Radio in the Arab World 2009” report says of the 18 Arab nations surveyed, Algeria ranks first with 50 state-owned radio stations, and Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine lead all Arab countries with the number of private radio stations. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has 24 state-owned radio stations, also has private-owned stations broadcasting in Arabic, English, Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu and Filipino. Libya and Oman were the countries most recent to allow private radio stations to operate. Virgin Radio Dubai (104.4FM) now operates in the UAE. Check out their website here.
