Progressives make a move up on the Talkers Heavy Hundred
Although the top four of the annual Talkers Magazine Heavy Hundred talk show hosts remain the same from 2010 (Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage), there are some interesting moves on the 2011 list. Three progressive talkers are in the top-10, with Dial Global's Thom Hartmann and Ed Schultz at numbers 8 & 9 and Washington, DC WOL-AM (1450) host Joe Madison moving into the top 10. Talkers Magazine publisher Michael Harrison tells Radio-Info the progressive talkers "play a role that must be respected." To those who want to dismiss conservative talk radio, he says they "are hurting the industry," adding that "talk radio needs right wing conservatives." Dr. Laura Schlessinger made the biggest drop down, leaving the top-10, and Howard Stern, who was not in last year's top-25, is #12 this year. Harrison says it "shows the importance of Stern, and we take satellite radio seriously." In addition, Harrison tells Radio-Info that due to the growth of sports/talk, Talkers will for the first time have a "Heavy Hundred" list exclusively for sports/talk hosts. As for where the future top talkers can be found, Harrison says "the next big stars in talk are not even on this list. They can be found on the internet and on YouTube." You can view the Talkers Heavy Hundred and Top-250 list here. Harrison also announced this year's Talkers Magazine New Media Seminar will be June 10-11 in New York City.
