Radio airplay for Michael Jackson songs is off the charts
Radio celebrated the passing of Michael Jackson by playing his music in a unprecedented way. According to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, of all his music, Jackson’s “Billie Jean” was played the most, logging 4,540 plays from June 22nd to June 28th, with nearly all coming after his death was announced on June 25. The Nielsen data shows 20 Jackson songs registered at least 1,000 plays in the past week. The Los Angeles Times reports Jackson’s “Thriller” logged more than 3,000 air plays last week, an increase of over 13,000% from the prior week. Overall, airplay for songs from the “King of Pop” increased over 1,700%. You can read the Billboard air play list here.
