"Radio-Ready cell phones" to be featured at this week's NAB/RAB Radio Show
There will be a “showcase” of available models that contain FM radio chips, made by Nokia (the 530) and Motorola (ROKR EM35). Their antennas are neatly embedded into the case of the phone, although those particular models are not yet sold in the U.S. Many currently-available smart phones, such as those manufactured by Samsung and Sony Ericsson, have the necessary chip, and lack only the antenna and some software. The NAB and its members have been lobbying Congress to mandate inclusion of FM chips in cellphones in the interest of public safety, as well as for the convenience of consumers. The NAB/RAB Radio Show officially begins Wednesday morning at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C.
