Radio Remembers: Clint Formby of Texas; Virginia's F. Ambert Dail

Clint Formby was at one time the chairman of the Texas Association of Broadcasters, as well as a former chair of the Radio Board of Directors of the National Association of Broadcasters, and he served six years on the board of The Associated Press. Clint was the longtime owner of KPAN-AM/FM (860 / 106.3) in Hereford, Texas outside of Amarillo. He became known in the 1950’s as the “Day by Day Philosopher,“ for creating commentaries for a series that eventually reached 17,000 episodes and was billed as the longest running consecutive radio broadcast by an individual in the U.S. Formby passed away following a battle with cancer. He was 86 … F. Ambert Dail spent 34 years on the air in the Tidewater section of Virginia on WGH-AM (1310). Dail got his start in the business while in high school on WBTM-AM (1330) in Danville, and during World War II could be heard on KFAR-AM (660) while stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. Dail would later join WGH, and was GM for 23 of his 34 years of service there. Under his leadership the AP awarded WGH-AM the Best Radio News Operation in Virginia for 10 consecutive years. After retiring from broadcasting, he stayed involved, becoming a reader for the blind on WYCS-FM (91.5) in Yorktown in the 1980’s. Dail passed away at 89.
