Radio Remembers: Dallas reporter Sam Pate; Oregon's Mike Bailey
Sam Pate was the first to report live on-scene when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, a report that became legendary. Pate was a reporter for a number of Dallas-area stations in the ‘60s & '70s, including KBOX (then at 1480), KVIL and KLIF-AM (1190). Pate passed away of brain cancer and other ailments. He was 77. You can hear his live and detailed reporting as President Kennedy was killed by clicking here. – Discuss it … He was on the air in Portland for 40 years, first joining KINK-FM (101.9) right out of college. Mike Bailey was known to listeners as “Lee Nelson” and “Bob Marx,” when he returned to KINK as station PD. He joined KKCW-FM (103.3) in 1986, where he used his real name on the air and spent the rest of his broadcasting days. Bailey, who had a kidney transplant in 1992, succumbed following a long battle with leukemia. He was 60.
