Radio Remembers: Gaffney Broadcasting's Ernie Payne; Canada's David Hankinson

He joined WAGI-FM and WEAC-AM in 1990 as an account executive and announcer, becoming co-host of the “Carolina In The Morning Show.” While Ernie Payne worked on-air in a number of capacities, including night and weekend shifts, he was also in sales and later become sales manager for Gaffney Broadcasting. Payne passed away at his home in Gaffney, South Carolina. He was 65 … He spent three decades in radio, working in news on stations in Edmonton, Calgary and Fort McMurray in Alberta, Winnipeg and Vancouver, holding management duties in a number of those markets. David Hankinson retired from radio in 1989, leaving CKRD in Red Deer, Alberta where he was news director. Hankinson, who took up trucking when he moved to the Northwest Territories, was killed in a truck accident while hauling groceries, according to the CBC. He was 64.
