Radio Remembers: NC's Chopper Harrison; Minnesota's Lew Latto
Chopper Harrison worked at a number of radio stations, with stops in Houston, San Antonio, Denver, Philadelphia and Minneapolis. But he may be best known for his five years as the morning host on Raleigh, North Carolina's WBBB-FM (96.1), because he was such an avid supporter of Carolina Hurricanes hockey. He even went so far as to sleep on the Hurricanes arena roof to support a ticket campaign to get the NHL All-Star Game to Raleigh. Harrison, who was also an intermission host for the team, has passed away from cancer. He was 59 ... Lew Latto got his start in radio as a teenager in Duluth, Minnesota, and remained in that area for his entire career. Latto became a DJ as a teenager for WKLK-AM (1230) in Cloquet, Minnesota, and became known as "Lucky Lew" Latto, working for several stations. He later owed six station in Minnesota, including WEVE-FM (97.9) in Eleveth. For close to 40 years, he hosted a morning show on WDSM-AM (710), and passed away as he was getting ready to go to work for his show early Wednesday morning. Latto was 71. The Duluth News Tribune has more about Latto here.
