Radio Remembers: New York's Jerry Marshall; Vancouver's Neal Foisy

Radio Remembers

It was in 1948 that Jerry Marshall gave a then-unknown Nat King Cole his big break by playing Cole’s “Nature Boy.” Marshall spent over 30 years behind the mic, including time on music station WINS-AM (1010) and hosting shows like “Music Hall” and famous “The Make-Believe Ballroom” on WNEW-AM. Marshall got his start on the radio while in college at Cornell University in 1942. Despite being accepted to law school, he took a job at Newark, New Jersey’s WAAT-AM, and his career would take off from there. He also hosted the “Jerry Marshall Show,” which was syndicated throughout the Northeast. Marshall, whose real name was Jerome Saul Jaffe, passed away at a Florida hospice. He was 91. The New York Times has more on his life and career here … He was best known for his work off-air, as a commercial writer in the Vancouver area. Neil Foisy worked at CHQM-FM (103.5) in Vancouver where his father managed the station, and also worked CFAX-AM (1070) & CHBE-FM “Kool” (107.3) in Victoria as a creative writer. Foisy was found dead in his Vancouver-area apartment, apparently of natural causes. He was just 51.
