Radio Remembers: Ohio's Dick Hanchette; Pittsburgh's John Barbero

Radio Remembers

He started out as an announcer and also sold air time for WJER-AM (1450) in the 1970’s but quickly became a fixture on the airwaves in the Dover-New Philadelphia, Ohio area. A message on the WJER-AM “Voice of the Valley” website says of Dick Hanchette, “One of the most distinctive and entertaining Voices of the Valley is gone. Big Daddy will be fondly remembered echoing down the halls here at WJER about "Work assignments!” and for his many collections, including his Mad Magazine memorabilia.“ Hanchette passed away. He was 60. The WJER Facebook page has more comments about Hanchette … He was the longtime public address voice for the Pittsburgh Penguins: John Barbero got his start in the business as a DJ on WESA-FM in Charleroi, and spent time as a mobile DJ and a teacher. He made his name announcing Penguins games in the "Igloo,” the arena where the hockey team plays, from 1972 to 2009. Barbero passed away following a battle with cancer and a brain tumor. He was 65.
