Radio Remembers

Bob Sprague spent over 30 years on Steel City airwaves. A Navy man who spent 20 years in the US Naval Reserves, Sprague got his start on WMAJ-AM (1450) in State College, Pennsylvania. He spent time in TV in Washington, DC and radio in Lynchburg, Virginia, but the bulk of his media time was in Pittsburgh, working at KQV-AM (1410), KDKA-AM (1020) and WTAE. An accomplished singer and pianist, Sprague just passed away. He was 70 … He was an avid golfer, an actor, and the one-time owner of Seattle radio stations. Alexander Stewart Ballinger was a Navy veteran who was based at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked on December 7, 1941. Ballinger was a Seattle native who moved back to the Pacific Northwest in 1959 and became a part-owner of KIXI radio and later KFKF, one of the first stations in the area to hire female DJ’s. Ballinger passed away at 95.
