Radio Remembers: Shreveport's "Foxy Faye" Fisher; SC's Tom Brockway
She was known to her listeners as “Faye in Hi-Fi” and “Foxy Faye.” Faye Fisher also has the distinction of being the first African-American woman to have her own radio show in Shreveport, Louisiana when she started her career on KOKA-AM (980) in the 1950’s, and at the time was the second black woman in the entire state of Louisiana to be on the air. She remained behind the microphone for 50 years. Fisher has passed away at 77. The Shreveport Times has more details about her life here … Tom Brockway got his start in radio while serving with the US Air Force. He would eventually land in South Carolina, where he was one-half of the “Breakfast Flakes,” as well as hosting shows on several stations in the area including “Sunny 105.5” WDAR-FM, WEGX-FM (92.9) and WJMX-FM (103.3), as well as WYAV-FM (104.1) in Myrtle Beach. Qantum Communications General Manager Craig Dalla Riva is quoted in South Carolina Now as saying, “He was always willing to do whatever he could to make this community a better place … The radio station and the entire community will not be the same without Brockway.” Brockway passed away following a battle with cancer.
