Radio Remembers: Tucson's Doc Phillips; Pennsylvania's James Pond

He was a longtime figure on Arizona radio, including 34 years in Tucson and as of late, a part-time DJ on classic rock KLPX-FM (96.1). Messages left on the Radio-Info Tucson board about Doc Phillips include “One of the great ones to listen to,” and “A best friend during my days at KWFM from 93 to 95, Doc will always be remembered. His positive spirit inspired me and so many others.” Phillips, who fought diabetes, passed away after suffering an apparent heart attack over the weekend. He was 60 – Discuss it … He was a member of the “Froggy” family, and as the Meadville, Pennsylvania WGYY-FM/WGYI-FM “Froggy” (100.3/98.5) PD, one of their leaders. His real name was Ron Smith, but on the air in northwestern Pennsylvania, he was known as James Pond, the afternoon host and PD of “Froggy.” Pond spent three decades in radio, the last nearly four years with Forever Broadcasting’s “Froggy.” Pond died of heart failure. He was only 49. Pond was the second member of the “Froggy” family to pass away this year. Forty-one year-old Karie “Crickett” Shields died suddenly in early-May.
