Ratings cost the U. of Minnesota's "Radio K" its federal funding

KUOM

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has slashed $50,000 in funding for non-commercial KUOM-AM/FM (770/100.7/104.5), citing low ratings. The funding was cut following recent Arbitron PPM ratings for Minneapolis- St. Paul. Radio K marketing director Alex Gaterud tells the University of Minnesota MNDaily, “In any public radio or public broadcasting setting, that’s a huge hit.” He says “We’re confident we can deliver [an] excellent product continuously, but we’re still looking to fill that gap.” Gaterud calls the PPM system “technologically unreliable,” and also says the listeners of Radio K are not the typical demographic to receive PPM devices. The radio station receives about $250,000 in student fees annually.
