San Francisco classical non-profit buys a South Bay translator for $205,000
Classical Public Radio Network needs signal help in the South Bay, since it took over the KDFC branding and classical library from Entercom and moved off of KDFC's traditional frequency of 102.1. The classical programming is now at the non-commercial frequency of 90.3, being LMA'd from the University of San Francisco. 90.3 doesn't cover the San Francisco market as well as 102.1. Now the classical group, with ultimate ownership in Los Angeles, is buying a translator at the same frequency as its San Francisco full-power station (90.3). The seller is another public radio
operator. Pataphysical Broadcasting Foundation (“Central Coast Public
Radio”) owns full-signal news/talk KUSP, Santa Cruz at 88.9. The
translator it’s selling is Los Gatos-licensed K212AA. As the
buyer says on its website, “Just in time for the holidays, Classical
KDFC in San Francisco can now be heard on 90.3 in Los Gatos, Saratoga
and in towns close by. We are purchasing a small translator that was for
sale there, and while it is not a solution to the South Bay/Peninsula
problem, it is a small step in the right direction.” It says it is “still seeking
a station” to cover more of the territory it lost in moving off of 102.1. Entercom is now using 102.1 as part of a classic rock K-Fox "super-station" with San Jose's KUFX (98.5). On the San Francisco Board of Radio-Info.com, they continue talking about KDFC, here.Previous and Next Stories
