Shareholders approve merger of Canada's XM and Sirius
Shareholders have voted for approval for Canadian Radio Satellite Holdings, the parent company of XM Canada, to merge with Sirius Canada. The combination will create what CSRH Chairman John Bitove calls, "a leading Canadian media company." It brings together the two players in Canadian satellite radio, combining XM's 600,000 subscribers with the 1.2 million that subscribe to Sirius, and creating a company with nearly 250 channels. It also gives the company a major footprint in cars, as 40% of Canadian new car sales in 2010 came with either a Sirius or XM Canada radio. XM Canada CEO Michael Moskowitz says, "Automobiles are no longer offered solely as a transportation device, but as a choice of lifestyle." The next step before the merger can be completed is approval by the CRTC, which is expected.
