So long to genial radio/TV personality Art Linkletter, dead at 97

The host of TV’s “People Are Funny” and “House Party” learned his craft on radio, beginning at KGB, San Diego, and continuing through live broadcasts from the California International Exposition and other fairs that were popular at the time. The New York Times says Linkletter, an orphan who was adopted by an itinerant preacher and his wife, did well in San Francisco radio but not so well in Los Angeles – until he began emceeing “People Are Funny” in 1942, for NBC Radio. That show was a hit and ran until 1960, and it transferred to television as a popular live show from 1954-1961. Linkletter also hosted the daytime “House Party” radio and TV during long runs. He continued working and writing books and died, essentially, of old age. He was an athlete in college and continued to enjoy good health into his 90s. The San Diego Board of Radio-Info is talking about Art Linkletter, here.
