South Carolina's WRIX knocked off the air by a lightning strike
A thunderstorm cut through Anderson, South Carolina this week, leaving WRIX-FM (103.1) a direct casualty. Lightning hit the building housing the studios on Tuesday night and fried the station’s two control boards. The local fire department had to be called in when one of the boards began to smoke. The storm hit as the building’s roof was in the process of being repaired, causing flooding inside the radio station and other businesses adjacent to WRIX. Morning show host Michael “PorkChop” Branch wrote on the station’s Facebook page on Wednesday, “we had some problems yesterday with the storms and some of our equipment was damaged. We will hopefully be back on Thursday.” WYFF-TV reports the roof of the WRIX offices was damaged and is being repaired, which is damaging the lobby. Branch told the TV station, “water came pouring in through the roof into the offices … It was literally like a water fall.” The station could not be contacted by Radio-Info, as their phone system was also damaged. See video of the damage from WYFF-TV here.
