Spanish Broadcasting System pays $16 million for a TV station in Houston
Interestingly, SBS, founded as a radio group, does not own any radio stations in Houston. But five years ago CEO Raul Alarcon's company began a Miami-based TV production house named Mega TV. Alarcon says "Houston is a leading U.S. Hispanic market and this transaction is an ideal expansion of our Mega TV footprint." The facility is full-power KTBU, known as digital 42 and Virtual Channel 55. It reaches 1.8 million households in the Houston metro, counting over-the-air, cable and satellite distribution. Seller is U.S. Farm & Ranch Supply Inc. Buyer SBS says it can fund the $16 million purchase price from cash on hand and cash flow from its other operations, meaning radio. FCC filings reveal that SBS will pay half in cash at closing, and the rest in a note held by the seller. Broker: Kalil & Co. The Texas TV Board of Radio-Info.com picked up the news about the SBS purchase over the weekend, here.
