Super PAC money shows up strongly in the radio ad-buys in South Carolina
From Media Monitors research conducted January 1-17. Media Monitors reports that the total of the ads placed by Winning Our Future across the Greenville, Columbia and Charleston markets is 1,371 spots – “607 promoting Gingrich and 764 being negative toward Romney.” But it says “the important fact here is that the Gingrich campaign ran no spots for radio, itself.” It didn’t need to, and of course it’s not allowed to coordinate or direct any activities of a Super PAC. On the Romney side of the slate, Media Monitors found the Romney-friendly Restore Our Future Super PAC buying 642 ads, or almost twice as many as the Romney campaign’s own 386. There’s a Rick Santorum-leaning Super PAC named The Red, White and Blue Fund, but Media Monitors didn’t detect any radio ads on its behalf. The actual Santorum campaign purchased 285 spots. Ron Paul bought 59.
