Surprise 1/1 change in Birmingham: Cumulus' WZRR to Top 40 "Vibe"

Cumulus WZRR (99.5) has been some form of classic rock since late 1988, but Cumulus converted it to contemporary hits as the New Year rang in. No airstaff announced. The Birmingham News says the sign-on stunt will be 10,000 songs in a row, commercial-free. Cumulus market manager Bill Thomas says "We knew that listeners wanted a choice for contemporary hits", without mentioning Clear Channel's WQEN ("103.7 The Q") by name. The former "Rock 99.5" (later called the Buzzard and other names/slogans), first debuted on Christmas Day, 1988. The Alabama Board of Radio-Info.com is talking about Cumulus, WZRR, and the new "99.5 The Vibe", here.

Cumulus announces a second change in the Birmingham market: all-sports WJOX-AM (690) has taken the name "The Fan." It was once a simulcast with WJOX-FM (94.5), but now airs a separate lineup based on programming from ESPN Radio and Fox Sports Radio. Over at 94.5, the FM's live-and-local hosts include Jay Barker, Tony Kurre, Al Delgreco, Jim Dunaway, Lance Taylor, Ryan Brown and Paul Finebaum.
